A Spiritual Journey - Chukas / Balak

Writer: Avroham Y RossAvroham Y Ross

Over the past year, I was given the opportunity to facilitate a spirituality discussion group at work, and it has truly transformed my life. During a recent discussion, a member asked me a thought-provoking question about why it seems like God constantly tests us. They expressed frustration at seeing others effortlessly go through life while struggling with challenges. I reminded them that we can never honestly know what others are going through, but I promised to think more about their question.

In this week's parsha, we read about the journey of the Jewish people on their way to Eretz Yisrael. On their journey, they had numerous challenges. On one specific occasion, they passed through the Arnon valley, and the mountains moved towards each other to crush the Emorite guerrilla forces waiting to ambush them. This event was a miraculous moment, but a challenge caused it. Why not skip the challenge and let the Jewish people continue the journey uninterrupted? Why would Hashem put His people in such a difficult situation to make a miracle and help them survive?

After reflecting on this, I shared my perspective with the group. We each have a unique purpose, and challenges are opportunities to grow and become a more robust version of ourselves. Even if a challenge feels pointless, there is always a lesson to be learned. Obstacles help us develop the skills we need to succeed. I know firsthand that this perspective can be tricky, but I pray that anyone going through a difficult time will find a resolution quickly, easily, and clearly. Finally, we will have enough strength to complete our ultimate mission of making this world a better place! Good Shabbos

All the best
